This joint UN Special Procedures allegation letter raises concerns about the arrest, prolonged detention, prosecution, and alleged ill-treatment of 43 Turkish nationals in the aftermath of the July 2016 coup attempt, many of whom are teachers, judges, lawyers, military cadets, and civil servants. It alleges systematic arbitrary detention, denial of due process, misuse of counter-terrorism laws, and ill-treatment including against pregnant women and detainees with children, and requests detailed explanations and remedial measures from the Turkish authorities.
