Advocacy Update: Addressing the Injustice Against 78-Year-Old Melek İpek in Turkey

As part of our ongoing efforts to defend human rights, we have taken significant steps to raise awareness about the case of Ms. Melek İpek, a 78-year-old philanthropist currently imprisoned in Turkey under dubious charges. Her detention is emblematic of the continued misuse of the judiciary to target individuals based on tenuous allegations, particularly under the guise of combating terrorism.

Ms. İpek was sentenced to 11 years and 8 months of imprisonment on charges tied to alleged connections to the Hizmet movement and financial violations, accusations lacking credible evidence. Her age, fragile health, and the politically motivated nature of her case make her detention deeply concerning.

This troubling situation highlights a broader pattern of judicial abuse aimed at suppressing dissent and undermining democratic values. In response, we have mobilized efforts to shed light on Ms. İpek’s case, emphasizing the urgent need for her release. Through outreach to international organizations, media, and policymakers, we continue to advocate for justice, highlighting the ethical and humanitarian implications of her imprisonment.
