Human Rights & Prison Conditions in Turkey After July 15

Following the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, Turkey’s prison population has surged beyond capacity. Over 612,000 people have been investigated, with tens of thousands detained, including 62,669 political prisoners, 69,301 students, and 2,767 children.

Reports reveal torture, mistreatment, and abuse, with 686 people tortured in detention and 51 suspicious deaths in prisons.

Over 600 babies are behind bars with their mothers, and 100 women were jailed while pregnant or after giving birth.

Mass arrests targeted journalists, lawyers, and public officials, marking an unprecedented human rights crisis.
